A Shepherd's Tale

video splash image

An original stage play by actor/playwright RICHARD GAREY

Immense yourself in the sights, sounds, music, foods and aromatic scents of the Judean hills of 2,000 years ago!

About the Show

A Shepherd’s Tale is told by Esrom a simple shepherd who is a deceptively complex man.

Based on research into the first century life of shepherds in Judea, Esrom tells tales of courage and desperation in stories about ‘The Big Shepherds Rebellion’ against Rome, the camaraderie of a man and dog as they battle wild animals and marauders in the hill country, and the fellowship of lonely men who gather twice a year in ‘The Basin’ with their flocks high above Bethlehem to exchange stories and dream of better days.

Tracing their ancestry back to the great Shepherd-King David, the shepherds of Bethlehem are the guardians of the promise, “but you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of you shall come forth to me the one to be ruler in Israel.” Just when it seems that Judah’s night can get no darker and hope is all but lost -- something extraordinary happens.

About the Music

Ancient Hebrew songs of hope, joy and longing accompany Esrom's tale and move the story forward. During the pre-show, recordings of the music of John Kolesar, ancient instrument scholar and musician, recreates an authentic backdrop of biblical music played on the Judean instruments of 2000 years ago.

"Mr. Geary came to our Church during the Christmas season and did a marvelous one man play entitled A Shepherd's Tale. It was wonderful, it inspired all of us. We had an excellent crowd from the community as well and the love offering covered all our expenses. He is such a talented performer. However, most important, the play had such a wonderful Christian message! Thank you for recommending this play for our Church. "
